participate
Study Tour Ascend takes place for three weeks in September 2024. As preparation, participants will conduct research and do an internship at a company. During the trip, several educational institutes and companies will be visited. Afterwards, participants get European Credits (ECs) for their efforts and experiences!
Participant timeline
You can apply for the study tour until the 1st of December. You can apply using this link or by e-mailing us at apply@studytourascend.com. Do you have any personal questions about applying? Don't hesitate to contact us at info@studytourascend.com!
The committee will conduct interviews with all applicants and decide the final participants for the study tour.
All participants will conduct a theme research, which is comparable to a small version of the bachelor thesis. This thesis has to align with one of the tracks below.
To make the study tour financially feasible, the participants will be matched with companies to do a work assignment of 120 to 160 hours.
Since the study tour is a recognized study course, participants will make several assignments focused on various aspects of the tour destinations.
The time has finally come for the study tour itself. Participants will have an amazing three weeks of travel to visit companies and educational institutes. Every day, two participants will write a blog about the day.
During and after the tour, every participant will write and finalize a short report about one of the companies and educational institutes visited. This is also done in pairs of participants.

Networking
Just as human progress has relied on effective communication, our smart devices are increasingly reliant on robust networks. As we transition into a world of even greater interconnectivity, the demand for secure, stable, and high-speed networks becomes more and more important.
Big Data & Machine Learning
In the world of interconnected technologies, we encounter large and complex datasets everywhere. The challenge we face today is how to extract valuable information from these datasets. This is a major issue in the field of information technology. This task is crucial for fields like understanding human behaviour and deep learning, which are essential for the development of interconnected technologies.
Cyber Security
As systems become more complex, so are the security challenges they will pose. These challenges are particularly important in the context of interconnected technologies, with a particular focus on the protection of high-risk infrastructure such as traffic control systems and automated vehicles. To navigate this complicated landscape of interconnected technologies, cyber-security is essential to address these evolving security challenges and ensure the robustness and resilience of the interconnected systems.
Embedded System
Devices are continuously becoming smaller and more capable of performing complex tasks, drawing us closer to a scenario reminiscent of smart dust. Nevertheless, this evolution introduces a host of challenges, like ensuring their dependability and reliability when these devices are seamlessly integrated.
Multi-Agent Systems
In the domain of interconnected technologies, we witness the emergence of advanced systems that rely on self-governing agents. These self-governing agents, although independent in their functionality, must harmoniously collaborate to accomplish their objectives. The study of these multi-agent systems is currently a prominent and dynamic area of research, holding the potential to serve as the fundamental building blocks of interconnected technologies that will shape our future.
Technology Acceptance
In the world of interconnected technologies, accepting and embracing technology is crucial. This goes beyond how people use technology and also involves dealing with legal and ethical issues that can arise when new technologies are introduced. Understanding and addressing these various aspects of technology acceptance is vital as we navigate the complex world of interconnected technologies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Every participant pays a participation fee. It will be between 1000 and 2000 euros. Last year it was 1000 euros, but due to price changes we can no longer guarantee that option. In addition, every participant will do a Contract Research assignment for 120 hours at a company, which will provide the rest of the funds needed. Some companies also offer 160 hours worth of research, in which case the participant contribution is lowered. However, in practice, this doesn’t happen often. Furthermore, the Study Tour is all-inclusive, which means that you have paid for all the business and cultural activities, as well as the meals for each day of the tour.
Contract research
We try to find companies that are close by for the participants to work. However, you may be required to travel a little in order to get to the company. If this is the case, we will discuss this with you beforehand. If you don’t want to travel, we will take this into consideration when choosing a Contract Research assignment for you.
Yes, this is possible. If the company is willing to pay the agreed fee, you can do the Contract Research at that company. If you want to do this, please email external@studytourascend.com.
Most participants will do their Contract Research over the summer holiday. If you desire to do this in the third or fourth quartile, and we have a company that is willing to accommodate this, you can also do it earlier.
Education
Yes, but you will have to arrange this with your supervisor, and they must agree that you will be doing the research for 17 EC in total. Also notify us of this, so we can take it into account in any deadlines we have to impose.
The Theme Course is a course of 7 EC, which means it will take you approximately 196 hours. Spread over twenty weeks, this means you’re expected to put in about ten hours per week.
Study Tour
Yes. Most evenings have no fixed programme, and sometimes you have the morning or the afternoon free as well. However, note that you are expected to participate in every visit that takes place, so keep that in mind when planning your activities.
Finalization
You only have to finalize the company report, which should not take too much time.
